Thank you to everyone who attended the I Am a Craftsman: 40 at 40 Party last Thursday. We had a tremendous and enthusiastic crowd who helped us do exactly what we hoped- kick-off the celebration of the Guild’s upcoming 40th anniversary and honor 40 of our own. A special thank you to Julia Daily, who conceived this event, was project manager and oversaw the production of the extraordinary book of the same name that was unveiled on Thursday. The books have been selling very well, so if you want a copy or copies for Christmas presents…don’t wait too long. Pat Flynn’s niece, Katie Douglas who recently received her BFA in Photography from Mississippi State, took hundreds of wonderful photographs at the event that will be posted to our Facebook Page this week. If you have not done so already, please “friend” the Craftsmen’s Guild of Mississippi page to keep up to date with all our happenings.

Eleven of the region’s top interior and landscape designers are incorporating the work of master craftsmen to create a unique handcrafted home in the Livingston area of Madison County. Billed as “The Firefly Cottage on Willow Pond,” the modern farmhouse-style home will showcase the options homeowners have when they use local craftsmen to make their homes one-of-a-kind. A preview cocktail party for the show house will be held on October 25th, from 7 to 9 pm. Tickets are $50. The house will be available for touring October 26th through November 4th, from 9 a.m. until 5 p.m. daily. Tickets are $10. All proceeds benefit the educational programs of the Craftsmen’s Guild of Mississippi. Tickets are available for purchase online at www.mscrafts.org, at the Mississippi Craft Center, through many of the participating designers, as well as at the show house.

Designers are Elish Phares, Joan Hawkins, Annelle Primos, Patti Hairston, Ruth McMillin, Lisa Palmer, Celia Barrett, Pam Anglin, Erik Kegler, Nancy Price, Pam Rogers and Mimi Martinson.

Craftsmen include David Ellzey, porcelain tile; Frank Wells, furniture; Steve Norquist, lighting; Al Bruce, front door and kitchen island; Mike Williams, lighting; Andy Hilton, concrete island counter; Fletcher Cox, dining table; Jenny Thomas, glassware; Teresa Haygood, bathroom mosaic; and Cathy and Bill Shook, copper gas lantern.

Refreshments and a Gift Shop will be open during the tour and most of the furniture and accessories in the house will be available to purchase.

The house is the first to be built in Chestnut Hill, the first residential subdivision of the Town of Livingston. Led by David Landrum, developers are recreating the Town of Livingston, which was the county seat of Madison County in the 1800′s. Along with residential properties, Livingston will have a downtown commercial area with a general store, restaurants, shops, a chapel and farmers market.

To visit the show house, take I-55 to the Madison exit 108. Go west on 463 for approximately 10 miles to just before Highway 22. The Chestnut Hill brick entrance and gate is on the left.

.

by Julia Daily

The Craftsmen’s Guild of Mississippi will release I am a Craftsman: 40 at 40-Celebrating the 40th Anniversary of the Craftsmen’s Guild of Mississippi with 40 of its Exhibiting Members in October, to precede the holiday season before the actual anniversary year of 2013.

A Reveal Party to announce the 40 talented artisans featured in the book will be held from 6:00-9:00 p.m. on October 18, 2012, at the Mississippi Craft Center, 950 Rice Road, Ridgeland, MS. The University Press of Mississippi will distribute the books and the books will be available from Amazon, independent bookstores across the United States and at the galleries of the Mississippi Craft Center and online at www.mscrafts.org.

Mississippi would be a different state culturally without the excellence of handcrafted products by the talented members of the Craftsmen’s Guild of Mississippi. For four decades, the Craftsmen’s Guild of Mississippi has been a driving force in supporting local artisans and sculpting the craftsmen of tomorrow. Since 1973, the Guild itself has been exposing Mississippians to fine art crafted from the state’s own valuable, natural resources by the hands of its own talented citizens.

This volume, with over 162 color images, celebrates Mississippi’s finest craftsmen, forty of the Guild’s talented artisans on the 40th anniversary of the founding of the Craftsmen’s Guild of Mississippi.

The Guild’s craftsmen fostered change in the way people perceive craft and elevated craft to fine art. I Am a Craftsman: 40 at 40 shares their stories and remarkable talents.

Foreword: Patti Carr Black, Jackson, MS, is the author of over twenty publications, including Art in Mississippi, 1720-1980; The Mississippi Story; Breathing Art; and Eudora Welty: Early Escapades. Photography: Roy Adkins is a photographer specializing in fine art and portraiture, with recent work appearing in Time magazine, theJackson Free Press and Portico Jackson magazine. Text: Robin C. Dietrick, Jackson, MS, is a curator, writer, exhibition designer and editor of nine books for the Mississippi Museum of Art, including The Mississippi Story; A Painter’s Odyssey: The Art of Marshall Bouldin III; and To Paint and Pray: The Art and Life of William R. Hollingsworth, Jr.
